I will be admitted to hospital next Thursday, and I will have surgery on Friday. I can go home again on Monday or Tuesday.

I had surgery last Monday and the tumor was removed by a wide margin. In addition to the tumor, they also removed part of my diaphragm, a piece of vertebrae and part of a muscle. It was a tough operation and I am still far from my old self, but according to the doctor the outcome is excellent and she thinks that the cancer has been completely removed. Unfortunately, you never have 100% certainty with cancer, but for now I am cancer-free again.

Unfortunately, the tumor has returned, and my doctors are now discussing the next steps. They want to first perform a biopsy to determine the exact type of tissue, and then they will decide if they can and/or want to help me. Options again include radiation or surgical removal.

last week I was diagnosed with two malignant tumors in my back.

Starting tomorrow they will do several tests to see if it has metastasized and what kind of tumors they are. After that they will start the treatment.

I am convinced that I will survive this but I am definitely going to have a hard time.

There will be times when I'll respond slowly or not at all.

Should the need arise I'll ask for help from the community.

I will keep you informed of important developments.

It makes me sad to hear Willy and hope everything will be positive, with a better future ahead.

My doctor, together with other experts, looked at my scans again and came to the conclusion that it is not a new tumor but a dilated blood vessel (pseudoaneurysm) caused by the previous surgery. Compared to what they first thought it was, this is good news. It also requires surgery to repair the blood vessel, but a much simpler one.

Unfortunately, it turned out not to be a pseudoaneurysm after all. The surgery to repair it was unsuccessful, so I'm back to square one. More tests are being done now, and hopefully, I’ll soon hear what it actually is and whether anything can be done about it.

As you might understand, I’m currently not very focused on BOINCstats. I’m still keeping an eye on everything and solving any issues that arise, but I’m not feeling very motivated to work on new features at the moment.

Dear friends and users of BOINCstats,

Unfortunately, the latest scans and tests revealed that I will not win the battle against my cancer. I have several choices, all of which are bad. If I choose to undergo surgery or treatment again, I might gain a few months, but I will also experience more pain during that time. Therefore, I have decided not to pursue further treatment.

My doctors cannot provide a prognosis for how much time I have left. However, there are two possible ways my illness could progress. In the best-case scenario, there will be no metastases; the tumor will continue to grow and will cause me increasing pain. If I endure long enough, I will very likely develop a spinal cord injury causing paralysis. If metastases do occur, everything will progress very rapidly. Regardless of how the disease progresses, I will pass away within too short a time.

I will now look for one or more individuals to continue BOINCstats for me.

Nothing I can say or do will express my feelings over this news. Because of that, I will simply state that your work in developing this program has helped all of us understand how to do a better job in supporting our different institutions and research. Your contribution and effort will not be forgotten. Bless You. JB

Willy, I'm at a loss for words, as I'm sure many others are. The news hit the PrimeGrid community like a sledgehammer. While I never had the privilege of meeting you in person, you've touched all of our lives through BOINCstats, BOINC wouldn't be what it is without you.

Having watched my wife of nearly forty years beat cancer only to die from side effects of the treatment, I understand what you mean by, "choices, all of them bad." We'll miss you, and pray for you and your family.

Mike

I would like to express my gratitude for your truly hard work. Thank you. Suguru

Willy,
you first posted about this nearly three and a half years ago.
All that time this shadow on your health stayed with you, your family, and us, who you decided to keep informed.
Several times when you posted news regarding your condition I read them and didn't know if or how to respond; words seemed too shallow to express myself.
While this hasn't really changed I want to say thank you for you contribution to BOINC and to the people using your service to be able to contribute to BOINC themselves easier.
You'll leave a gap for all of us.
I wish for you to be able to go in peace, as I wish for your friends and family not to be disheartened when it's time to say good-bye.
All the best for the time you still have.

Greetings, Jens

Willy,
I've dealt with cancer, but I got lucky, and I've never had any recurrence. My wife's best friend was not as lucky, and hers had metastasized throughout her body and especially into her bones & spine. You know there's not a good prognosis after your last visit.
All that I can offer is to let you know that the world won't quickly forget you. I hope you can have some solace in knowing that you'll be remembered (that's the best that I hope for myself).
During this time, take care of yourself as best as you can.
