Hello fellow crunchers!

No, this is not yet another thread to bicker about credits, it's about the core of the project: the science.

There are no recent news about the search for extraterrestrial intelligence, no candidates lists, no newsletters about what happens and what's planned.

If you want more from the team at Berkeley, please read the Proposal to bring back the old SETI@Home spirit and consider to sign it.

Very nice idea Saenger a Thumbs up!
I also think that the science spirit has left SETI@home. Which is actually very sad )

It wasn't my idea actually, but that of some of my teammates. I just spread the news.

And if you participate in other fora as well, please feel free to spread it as well.

It's also available in german now:

Vorschlag, wie man den alten SETI@Home-Gedanken wiederbeleben koennte

To be honest: I stopped crunching SETI a few months ago. Not that I don't believe there are others out there, somewhere.

I switched to Einstein, my interest was drawn to the pulsars.

And other CPU time I devote to some down to earth projects that solve problems here. I support Rosetta and Predictor, this since my father was diagnosed with a very rare form of cancer (only 1 out of 200000 people has it) with no possible cure.

And I fill up spare time with two projects that have very short work units.

It’s not only science that attracts me in a project, its real world things as well.

That said: yes, SETI was different in the old days. Nowadays SETI is just a vehicle for BOINC, the main test environment. And it’s treated like that as well by most participants (how many real SETI problems are there in the SETI boards, and how many are BOINC related?).

I would love to see SETI find that one signal that changes everything, damn, it will shake the ground under most religions. But it won’t be me that finds it, not now anyway.

Maybe the feeling comes back. Who knows.

i'm afraid i have to agree with Willy's post, there are more pressing matters like climate change and protein research before worrying about other civilisations

if those "little green men" really want to find us then let them do the work, let them find us :p

While I agree with you as well, and have Seti only back now because of this silly strike, I'll heve it only for sentimental reasons on a small timeslice. And I think, once I reached 20K I'll let it rest at all.

But nevertheless is it not good to have such a big project, and no science seems to be done on the surface. If it's just a beta-test for BOINC, say so, so people can switch to the projects with a real purpose. But from the boards there i can see still people eager to look for ET, and afaik they really search for something, so this should be made public.

very valid points, it's a tough one

I do support the need for a BOINC test bed, and i also support the science behind SETI, but considering it's current state (not being about the science, server-load problems, application development issues, and BOINC development in general) it's becomming less worth-while for the science of it.

For it to be considered useful again (in my opinion), they need to do some reorganisation, and improve the way the search is actually done, from my understanding, they're effectively searching a single drop of water, out of a whole ocean, the odds are against them, i suspect other civilisations either will find us, before we find them, or they have already found us, and don't wish to communicate because we're a dumb civilisation because we're distroying our own planet

I am afarid i have to vote SETI down also, I have only seen the 1.2-1-4 ghz range studied by them and it is years old now. Maybe we need to look at world problems first.

Yeah, I was crunching SETI back in 2000 on classic. Things have changed a lot since then. I'm sorta hoping that when the Planet Quest project gets out, it will re-capture a lot of this. From the description, it will be combining the search for extra-solar planets with "optical SETI". Should be interesting. The public beta is still a good ways away though (this fall when I emailed the project's people, and got a reply).

I agree... I have stopped crunching SETI in the spring after crunching for 5 years under 2 different accounts. Doing mostly Malaria Control right now. I have yet to decide which project to add back on now that HashClash will be hibernating lor a while It will probably be a protein related project, I think. CPDN stresses my PCs way too much and they only return computing errors

I am crunching for all projects where I have less than 2600 credits, in an attempt to move SETI to the bottom of my signature. Clearly doing that I will have a problem named "BURP", oh well...
