OK, the project has been down over Christmas. Some news would be appreciated, but stuff happens. I would take issue with Carlos that this is a bad project. This is being run from a guy's basement, not a university. It's usually up. When he goes hunting for a week and something happens, it'll be down for a week. If he goes away it won't be back up until he gets home. If the server dies he needs to wait for the parts. If you can't live with that then there are many other projects available. You shouldn't get ulcers when Collatz is down. Just do something else. Milkyway has been getting this benefit from me.

I've been crunching this project for years and I eagerly await its return. I doubt that I'm saving the whales or anything, but it's fun to do. If it's not fun for you then you need to do something else.

Yeah, the project is back up, but without a peep from Slicker to explain the extended outage. This fact alone makes me reconsider my support for Collatz. I'm sorry if anyone disagrees, but I feel all the people who contribute their hard earned dollars to this project at least deserve the courtesy of being informed of what happened.

There were several huge power hits around 5pm CDT today. The first broke the UPS (it beeped, popped (never a good sound), died, and wouldn't even power back on.) After bypassing the UPS, the second power surge occurred a few minutes later and took out either the Collatz server's power supply, the motherboard, or both. Estimated project down time depends upon whether I can replace the PSU or whether I have to replace the server or recreate and re-setup the Collatz BOINC project.

All it needed was a new PSU. The data was not corrupted (good news) so everything is back to normal.

Most likely later on today. Depends on how fast the electrical contractor can replace the main power panel.
Slicker had posted on Collatz that it was going to be replaced yesterday.

Collatz Conjecture: Planned Outage Today
The circuit breaker panel will be replaced today which will require all power to be shut off for an extended period today. Unfortunately, I have been given no specific start time or finish time. So, load up on your work units now.

I would hope it is no more than 6 hours from now around 23:00 UTC.

So the Collatz site says "Project is down".

Why is it down so often? Is it a hardware problem or lack of funds to maintain the hardware or internet connection?

It's run by one guy out of his house, and it always seems to go down when he's out of town... Murphy's law, I guess. Looks to be up now.

I wonder if project servers that go down on you so often cost more
