Hi

A new project, Spanish, looking at energy? may be related to Bifi of old.

There is a couple of very large (3.5 & 17.5MB ) files to download initially. So this may not suit dial up users.

But there is a screensaver. more like a series of photos of Zaragoza.

[edit]
workunit takes about 16mins on P4.

BIFI is "Instituto de Biocomputación y Física de Sistemas Complejos" (Institute of Biocomputing (?) and Physics of Complex Systems). Apparently the project is working on "clean energy".

Yes, new project, Zivis.

But administratos have NOT yet give the go ahead for integration into boincstats.

It was thought to be a local project, but obviously they are now surpased by people from all the world joining in.

Project sciense: to traze particle movements on superheated plasma. Related to fussion dry run on future ITER through CIEMAT spanish organisation. See following pages for more info: (english)

http://www.ciemat.es/portal.do

Basics: Public support behind (not a corporation).

First aim was to involve people from Saragossa (Spain) in a shared computation experience (there is a link even to neigborhoods statistics with prizes FOR LOCALS ONLY.

Copypaste a mail from one of the adminstrators in its forum:

Hello, we woke up of the siesta

Zivis project aims to create a distributed infrastructure in Zaragoza but it is open for everybody. At this moment, the only difference is the fact that the awards are only offered to people living in this great city.

Of course, we encourage all of you to participate and collaborate in this project which aim always included to increase the knowledge about Zaragoza abroad.

About the science behind the application, let me offer you a short introduction. What we are sending to the participants to calculate are particles trajectories inside a fusion device. Each work unit includes several particles to calculate. The result of the computation include significant values of the simulation, and sometimes values for its visualization. As you supose, dynamics in plasma is a complex problem and we solve them with stochastical differential equations. That's why the name of the application in boinc is langevin.

BTW, Zaragoza is Saragossa, just spanish spelling...

I am one of the admins of the Zivis project. As it has been said, it has a local flavour, in the same sense that ClimateChange had a local flavour. Part of the sponsorship comes from the Major of our city, and we are supossed to reciprocate by giving speeches about the scientific side of the project.

On the other hand it is a BOINC project and we are very happy about the international input. We are taking this week to think about it and we could start to export stats next week.

An extended deadline of 2 days would be helpful to not getting negative debt values and a high dcf value.

DCF has nothing to do with deadline.

I noticed that their work units are variable in length. They've been taking me anywhere from 2 to 12 minutes or so.

Also despite the short run times the upload file sizes are around half a megabyte. Since many WUs can be crunched in a short time this might be a concern for people on limited connections.

Update: it is a local proyect with local prizes (WTF!!!) to the locals of Zaragoza, Spain. Timeline limit 9th May. For info, that day being 18 days before the local elections (WTF^3!!!)

For the moment (until further development) I recomend not crunching: it is their game, let´s them play it: like playing "who has the faster quad core PC for a prize?" but with boinc.

I am atonished: what is next... a tv show "Chruning Brother"??

here are the bases of the game (in spanish):

http://cmisapp.zaragoza.es/contenidos/conocimiento/zivis/regconcurso.pdf

see under "Premios para individuales", page 2 "Prizes for individuals"

prizes are to be here, NOT YET LOADED, but they will load them later (probably tomorrow) because they have not yet finalized the list:

http://zivis.bifi.unizar.es/premios.html

both in spanish. By the way, you HAVE to be living in Zaragoza to gain a prize. For outsiders they would give 2 tikets for the Zaragoza Expo next year for top cruncher. Is it in line with boinc policy?

Is there a BOINC policy for project owners? Anyone can make a project to crunch about anything, and if they want to give prizes, I haven't seen any "You can't" rule anywhere.

I don't really see too much wrong with the prizes if its going to raise awareness of distributed computing in their community. Don't forget, if they attract new people to BOINC then the new users may also come across some other BOINC projects they like!

I think that's no absolutely correct. The game is just an idea to motivate people on cruncking. The project is about atomic fusion energy.

Yes, when they start exporting XML files.

Hello,

I have activated db_dump and there is green light for international use.

A Caveat is that we have not calibrated the credits so we are using it as in the classical deploy I guess. We could recalibrate after the end of our contest, say by May 15, if our crunching continues with the same set of applications. Meanwhile, I think you should consider us as a beta deploy.

If you notice some problem with the export of stats, tell me directly via gmail, user al.rivero.
