Simple solution for those who are annoyed that Leiden does not show on their stats: don't crunch for Leiden until they go public.

Or just annoy them in their message board (if you find the URL) until they want to be displayed

Well, it's not only the url they want limitations on - the knowledge of the projects existens shouldn't be spread too widely as well. And yes I know, "it's already mentioned here and there and everywhere" - but just imagine how much more it would be mentioned if it was on all stats sites, all signatures. There's a huge difference from that and a few selective threads that eventually disappear from plain sight (i.e. on to page two etc.)

By selecting a sig that does show your Leiden stats you do the same as those site creating those sigs and the stats sites that don't respect project admins' whishes: You're treating them with disrespect. Just think what that could mean in the future when other projects come along - they might not export XML until the very last minute - or never for that matter. In the end such decisions will ruin it for everyone, including you, the sig sites and the stats sites, no matter if they respected project wishes or not.



Well, I suppose you don't care if people sell your e-mail adress to spammers although you explicetly requested the e-mail address not being shared with anyone else...

That about sums it up

When a project makes use of the Internet and volunteers to donate time and money (I live in a place where energy doesn't come free), the project shouldn't expect strict privacy. If privacy is wanted than the project should have chosen for a closed network and invest in their own computing power. At least, that's my humble opinion.

I disagree with this "I do because I can" reasoning. It means that even though I don't want to be spit in my face, if someone does anyway, the only ligitimate reason they need is "becuase I can, and it was your own choice to stand in my spits path".

the simple truth is that it's going to be a public project, like many projects they'll want our CPU time (because like many projects, they don't have the money to buy/rent that much computing power)

but for now they're still in the testing stages, and don't want lots of public attention yet

the least we can do, as people in a society who are working "for the greater good", is respect these simple wishes, which don't exactly put a lot of demand on us users, we only have to keep our mouths shut for the time being until the project is ready for public launch/release

And BOINCstats is not alone in hiding projects like Leiden. BOS doesn't show it either, although it already checks for scheduler status, the ESEA MiniStats doesn't show it, although stats are gathered and even secretly added to BOINC totals - almost the same goes for BOINCstats, it already gather stats for Leiden, so when the ok is given by the project admins, stats will be visible, complete with history etc.

Any reason why there have been no new projects of late? It seems like there are still lots of ideas out there. Are experimenters not using BOINC anymore? Is there some other distributed software? Are people not doing new distributed computing projects anymore?

desire and motive aren't everything, means and opertunity are also needed

it takes someone who actually has the time and experience with computers to set up a project (they also need to develop an app, not an easy thing)

they also need money for all that, and everything takes time, there are plenty of projects to crunch for already, rosetta is always looking for more CPU power, why not help them out a bit

Some other projects are also in the works, but will take time to come forth. I emailed the people at Planet Quest after, well spring is almost over and hadn't heard of anything. Anyhow, from the reply, they're looking at a fall 2006 time frame for going into beta. Lets keep our fingers crossed But developing these apps, and getting projects up doesn't all happen over night.

Then other projects, as the last respondent (read orbit@home for instance), are looking for money and what not, to continue their efforts and move things forward. The bi-word in all this is that development can take time and sometimes money... This doesn't mean that there aren't any projects in the pike, but for a time we will have to wait before seeing them manifest...
