@ponbik: of course finding an alien race would be interesting, but I think it would be just as exciting to understand proteins to the same level that we undertnad DNA... maybe the search for aliens is "sexier" because of the immediate fame and fortune thatwould be associated with it, while discovering the malformed protein that causes a disease like Alzheimers... it's not just beneficial, it's exciting!!! But maybe that's just my Biology background coming through....

And just FYI, I do dedicate 10% of my time to SETI... I think it's an interesting and good project, but I find proteins and climate a lot more exciting...

that's the great thing about boinc -- you don't have to make a single choice about which project is "best" or "most exciting". Each project has it's own merits and I particularly enjoy being able to spread my cycles across all of them.

@Lizz: Oh no, I agree completely that the benefits of discovering various protein combinations and using that to generate the next generation of super medicines is immediately rewarding. As an Economist and a "Political Gun", I can definitely see the pings of that. There's no denying it at all.

@Lizz: At the same time, however, SETI's something fundamental in every person and that's one of the best things about BOINC. It allows people like you to pursue predicting weather patterns, unfurling protein data and looking at pulsars while the Astronomy-heavy people like me dig looking for the "WOW" signal of our lifetime. Glad to see people of your interests working along with me, even though we're on different projects. Science is the goal.

@m: Yep, but it's still unfine @ponbiki, jaroyse: I don't expect every single lab to have it's diesel, but I expect the UC to provide sustained power supply to it's labs. And I expect 24/7 servers to be in some secure environment. IMHO they don't belong in every labs basement, but in some central room/building.

@Sanger: I normally agree with you but since the SSI Building where SETI's located was built back in the 1960s, it's rather hard for SETI to have the ability to locate all of their equipment into "secure" locations. Don't forget that they're still running SETI Classic as well. UC provides power to its buildings but buildings are old, they get problems, and this is just an incident where Chaos Theory proves correct: There's no such thing as perfect calm.

@Sanger: Not to mention SETI is but one group using the facilities, hence they only have "Rooms" and not a quad or section or floor of the building. They make due with what they have and it's surprising that they manage to do what they do. Facilities can only do so much preparation and most times its reactionary not proactive.

Seti scheduler is on but both UL and DL are not allowed. Anyone else with the same problem (again)?

Even though scheduler is up, last I saw there were no wu to send out anyway. Once everything is running again, it'll take a while to send wu out to everyone who is waiting for them (like us).

@Pumpo: The scheduler is up, but the database? As nearly everything is still red, I think thy're still offline but for the mainpage. sad thing, but good for the other projects

SETI mainpage mention that up and download is off during their night due to the power problems...

Sorry The building power is still untrustworthy. A diagnostic power outage is going to be scheduled for some time next week. To clarify our current situation, all of our servers are in fact on UPSs and we suffered no database damage from the power outage this past Monday. What we do not have in place yet is a graceful shutdown system should the power fail and we are not here. We have installed the software on the servers that will enable them to recognize when they are on battery backup. We are waiting on the special communication cables that are necessary to connect the UPSs to the servers. They had to be special ordered and we expect them tomorrow. While we have been down these last 2 days, we have been doing various maintenance tasks. Currently we are running a database backup. Once that is done, we plan to bring the project up for half a work day or so today. We will shut it down again at 01:00 UTC. The classic SETI@Home project is currently up (but will also be shut down at 01:00 UTC.

Better that it happens to SETI now as opposed to after the mandator switch from classic to BOINC.

They have worse problems with electric power, than we had in the communist years.

@Woyteck: The building's from the 60s, be glad that it's only isolated to the Electricity!

@Woyteck: You're probably right. thats excessive capitalism I had less problems in a house with wiring from the 30s. And concerning Clifornia, the power supply was probably better in the 60s then now, with all this 'rolling blackouts'

If Berkeley's folks set up a project on distributed electric power we could give them some watt of our power and the problem is fixed... :]
