Even though changing venue's through bam correctly updates the project location, boinc isn't using these preferences, instead just using default preferences.

To test I setup three different venues global (default), home and work with different settings for switch between applications (5min, 7min and 11min respectively)

Code:

As you can see even though each project has it's location set as home, only the default preferences are being used by the fact that it switched between applications after 5 mins not 7 mins and also by the entry "General prefs: using your defaults".

How do I get my systems to use anything but the default preferences via BAM?

Try pressing Update on all projects. The venue is downloaded from project servers, not from BAM. BAM tells the projects, projects tell your computer.

Did that .. still using default general settings, still swapping between apps every 5 mins instead of 7.

You would have to debug the Boinc client. There have been some changes recently done to the server and client code, but some projects run old software (the version number is logged after an "update project" ). 505 is actual IIRC, less is old, more is a modified version or PerlBoinc.

Sometimes(!) for me worked: Update venue in BAM! - save to projects - update the client with a project that uses 505.

Even when I update with a 505 server it still only comes back with "General preferences: using your defaults". I have this problem with both 5.4.11 & 5.6.4 clients.

I have 4 projects, 3 are 505 and one (spinhenge) is 504.

I can reproduce this. Will let the devs know about it.

Perhaps now there is more reaction. My last try at june, 22 did not lead to an answer.

PS: There are projects, that ignore settings by BAM! totally. I think that are the ones with old versions.

I've worked it out!!

The only way to get the Boinc client to change client_state.xml to reflect a location change is to 1) change the location AND 2) go into General preferences, edit and update (you don't need to make any changes though) and 3) force a scheduler connection. Took me ages to work this out.

I tried doing a sync with BAM to get it to then connect to a project but BAM doesn't currently force a connection with a project in this situation (which I believe it should). Pretty hard for sites that you are trying to control remotely (which is the point of BAM isn't it?).

Now the only issue is when you decide you want to return to just General prefs ... only way I've been able to figure it out is to manually remove <host_venue> from client_state.xml
