I will also be using one of my existing 500 GB SATA HDD's for game storage (possibly a 1 TB if I end up needing the space) but the SSD will be the primary drive.

This system has been, and continues to be a great system that is very responsive and a decent performer--though I did get it in 2008, and it is not without its problems. Sleep mode has never really functioned properly (when it wakes up, various things don't seem to work properly such as sound and some USB devices) and lately it takes a few boot cycles before it will actually turn on--often it will just turn itself off during the Windows boot screen. I have upgraded it through the years, as it originally came with 4 GB of RAM and a Radeon X1600 512 MB card. I have also had to replace the motherboard, which just decided to crap out one day.

I have thought about just upgrading the video card (again) but I'm not sure if the aging dual-core processor will push one of the newer mid-range cards like an R7 265 or GTX 750 Ti. I have a little cash right now and can afford the upgrade, though I will be out of the country a significant chunk of next year and thus won't be making as much use of it as I could if I were here... So I'm not sure if it would be better to try upgrading the card, and wait for a completely new system until I get back. But if it seems like a good time to upgrade, I'm ready to make the jump. Any opinions or feedback would be appreciated.

My $.02:

1. You are wise to shop the NewEgg combos. . . shop them extensively before you pull the trigger.

2. Intel Core i5-4590 is OK, but Intel Core i7-4770 is much better for roughly $100 more.

3. Radeon HD 7970 / R9 280X, but the GeForce GTX 770 is only slightly more expensive, but your BOINC options aren't as limited. Note: I am not a gamer, but I have two sons who are and they are big on Nvidia video cards.

4. On your PSU, I would go at least 80 PLUS GOLD Certified for BOINC 24/7 operation, and I believe you could light up your box with this 650W unit, right now: $70 with rebate. Or this 80 PLUS PLATINUM Certified unit Note: I have Rosewill boxes and Rosewill PSU's and find them to have been good values. . . .

5. I'm running one box with a 128GB SSD It's large enough to load the Win7 OS and a game or two. . . Smokes booting up. . . . If your old HDD isn't SATA 6.0Gb/s, and at least 32MB Cache, consider these: Here are some likely candidates. I recommend WD. . . have had good luck with several from them.

6. If you have access to a computer shop that has a boneyard section, you could possibly find a serviceable case for the cheap.
