Over at Cosmology a minor debate has errupted about why people crunch Boinc. Some feel its mostly about credits. I linked in a post to the poll 49 weeks ago "Why do youparticipate in BOINC?"Some argue that no one would crunch for a project that gave no credit so....

My question is Willy can you rerun that very poll at 1 year to see if there has been any change in participants views?

Can you run a poll that asks if no credit where given for a scientifically important project would you still participate?

Maybe that poll shouldn't be just a yes/no question, since there's a lot of gray in between the two absolutes. Maybe in addition to "Yes, definitely" and "Absolutely not," there should be at least one alternative like, "Yes, but would dedicate less time than to projects that award credit." I think a lot of folks might fall into that category. Or, as an alternative, how about a poll like this:

How important is credit to your decision to crunch for a particular project?
* Extremely
* Very
* Somewhat
* Not very
* Not at all

That might be a better method of taking the temperature on the range of feelings about credit that are out there. Just a thought.

I agree that might be a better method however I would like to see a yes or no because thats the way the original question was asked and if people were serious in how they answered that original poll you wouldn't think you would see that much of a drop-off. My guess if posed that way with no credit 10-20% would say they would. Just a guess but thats why I would like to see a real poll on this.

How you ask a question really changes the response so a little thought needs to be input.

Please keep in mind, and self-selecting poll is only good for entertainment value.
