Hi,

something changed in the last 2/3 days on the website.

It now hangs because of a long running script for each page you open.

I have the prob in IE.

After the script is stopped the page is OK.

I either wait for the message to stop the script or press the X to stop page loading.

In Firefox, there is no error reported but I may see what the script is related to.

In IE after stopping the script the Advert on the LHS is not displayed.

In Firefox this advert is displayed now on the RHS and is much larger than it used to be.

Regards,

No code was changed in the BOINCstats webcode in the last week. It may be an ad.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by:
In Firefox, there is no error reported but I may see what the script is related to.

In IE after stopping the script the Advert on the LHS is not displayed.

In Firefox this advert is displayed now on the RHS and is much larger than it used to be.

LHS -> left hand site ad?
RHS -> right hand site ad?

The RHS add is always 600px high. It is shown on widescreen monitors instead of the LHS ad.

If it's the ad that is causing the long running script, are you able to determine which ad it is? If so I can block it.

of course, I do not get that ad myself.

Hi Willy,

Previously I have always seen a small square ad placed underneath the social site icons on the LHS.

I have been using Firefox for Boincstats for about the last 9 months.

My default for Firefox was to have the page zoom set so the stats right margin was near the RHS of my screen.

This is why maybe I never noticed an ad on the RHS but I do see it now.

In Firefox now with the ad on the RHS the place under the social icons is not reserved.

In IE when I stop the script the same place I am talking about is still reserved (eg empty) and there is no ad on the RHS.

I attach images to show this. The first is IE, second is Firefox

Please understand I think your site is great and I am just trying to help.

My belief is it is some Googly Ads effect combined with IE.

Regards,

(sorry I could not work out how to shrink the image but right click as you know lets you see full image)

There is some Javascript that takes care of ad placement. If there is no ad on the RHS and a reserved space in the menu, that means the browser was not wide enough for the RHS-ad and an add is placed in the menu. Since the ad is empty either no suitable ad was found or it is the offending ad with script error.

I have been getting the same error message when using IE. I have a seperate thread about it on here somewhere. Someone posted to that thread, giving the link to this one. Strangely, when I follow the given link, I end up in this thread, but the 'reply' button is missing off the left hand side of the screen, and also I appear to have become Dutch. At least, I think it's Dutch.

Actually, I just notice that all my menus here are also in Dutch...

Have I been beamed across the pond when I wasn't looking?

Anyway, the point was, the script error is not occurring for me when I use Firefox. In IE, it is almost unworkable. Every screen, I would have to tell the script to stop, usually twice each time.

I don't know how it relates to the ads, though. I am on a wide-screen monitor, and my browser windows are pretty wide, if that helps.

Phil.

The site is suddenly in Dutch because the link given in the other thread includes a parameter for Dutch language.

So, today I'm using IE for BOINCstats. No problems so far, but I probably do not get the same ads as you. It can be an ad that causes the problem because the ads are just pieces of html+javascript, just like the rest of the website. Latetely there have been a number of occasions where mallware was distributed via an ad on several big websites (for example the biggest Dutch news website nu.nl). They may be targeting IE directly because (pardon my French) IE is a piece of cr@p not worthy of the name browser. Switching to Firefox (or Chrome which I use as main browser) is not a bad idea at all.

First off allow me to say thanks to the folks at BoincStats for running such a great stats site!!

I use IE on all of my crunchers and all of them have this dreaded script error problem. I first noticed the problem about a week ago. Anyways, I just wanted to chime in to let the folks above know that they are not alone in experiencing this issue.

Folks:

This 'long-running script' error does seem to be related to certain ads: I notice that every time an ad for downloading Google Chrome, or buying a Chromebook, is at the top of the page, the long-running script happens.

If true, this of course would mean that Google has written their ad code this way intentionally, to slow down IE .... which they hope will cause you to download Chrome.

'Do no harm', my elbow ;---)

And yes, thanks so much for all the work that you guys at BOINCstats do for us.
