Hello!

I have a question about how to setup BOINC for my needs. I already tried different settings, but none of them really worked...

My computer runs overnights until I leave home at 7:00. Problem is, from like 24:00 on I have no internet.
Now when running, it often happens that BOINC runs out of work in midst of the night.

How can I set it so that it will always have enough work? I already tried to raise the time between updates, and also set it to 'Only use Internet from 08:00 to 01:00'. This should disable in the rest of the time, right?

I never see it download more work. I never have any WUs pending, only the two active ones (one per core). If they finish before the end of the night, the computer is idle.

How can I make it download enough work so it can run all the night?

Thanks,
Martok

Hi Martok

Have you tried to set "Connect to network about every " in General preferences to
2 or 3 days?

Yes, I did...
It didn't connect then right away (as expected), and when I manually forced it to get work, in the log it always said: "(not requesting new work or reporting completed tasks)".

Also, all active projects show 'overworked'. Only project not showing this is NanoHive, but I never got work from them. Could this mean that the LTD is somehow bad? I have recently seen a tool to reset it, if this has something to do with it, has someone a link?

I never had these problems on my single core machine, but the new dual core often runs out of work.

Update from this night:

It ran out of work at 02:50, so it was idle for about 4 hours. Now when it got new work, it only was for NanoHive and BURP. These are the only ones with a positive LTD...
Also, both WUs only take 5 / 9 hours, so they are way too small to take a whole day. Shouldn't the scheduler notice that?

Martok,

I seem to recall that BURP has a very short duration (1 day?) and your stats page shows you running that. If you are using the new BOINC version (5.8.15+) then you could well be suffering from the change in implementation of the 'connect to' setting. This used to work as a cache setting, but no longer.

If you have it set 'too high' then the computer flips into a sort of EDF mode and won't get work. Bizarrrely, lowering the setting will often get you more work! This page in the Boinc-Wiki gives some suggested figures for you to try - although it odes not go down to one day deadlines.

I think on Chess960 (also one day deadline) I had to go down to about 0.2 or even 0.15 to get a maximum cache. Might be worth a try.
