Hi @ll,

I just got a computation error on an Einstein WU. A forum search at Einstein indicated that the boinc-internal processor-throtteling may actually have caused this and the alternative would be touse other programms to restrict the CPU usage. Now, is this a problem also known at other projects or only Einstein specific?

It is said that the throttling causes frequent restarts on multi processor/core systems. That also occurs at SETI. Since your computer only has one, I'm not sure if it's the same problem. The errored-out task has multiple (probably 100) messages of
Code:
Can't acquire lockfile - exiting
FILE_LOCK::unlock(): close failed.: No such file or directory
That could hint to problems with virus checking software.

Did you perform an advanced search on "lockfile" at Einstein?

No, I have not yet checked the "lockfile". Only found out today where to look up the error messages....

On the Einstein homepage the task shows below error message.

<core_client_version>5.10.45</core_client_version>
<![CDATA[
<message>
too many normally harmless exit(s)
</message>
<stderr_txt>

Plus of course what you already mentioned about the lockfile.

The message window in boinc shows repeatedly:
22/10/2008 05:03:32|Einstein@Home|Task h1_0778.85_S5R4__503_S5R4a_2 exited with a DLL initialization error.
22/10/2008 05:03:32|Einstein@Home|If this happens repeatedly you may need to reboot your computer.
22/10/2008 05:03:32|Einstein@Home|Restarting task h1_0778.85_S5R4__503_S5R4a_2 using einstein_S5R4 version 604

I will do some research on my own, but maybe you got some further ideas....

That's the "normal" message when BOINC client had lost connection to the application (lost heartbeat).

Only that you exclude your BOINC data directory from virus scanning (including sub dirs) and, if that doesn't help, that you don't throttle via BOINC preferences. If you should get heat/performance problems at 100% cpu usage, you could try ThreadMaster (3rd-party product) to throttle BOINC. That helped me before I blew the dust bunnies out of my laptop. Now I run it at 100% again.

Ok, some time has passed and I did some "testing".

- Excluding the BOINC-directory from my virus software had no effect, some Einstein WU caused the same error
- When running the CPU at 100% I experienced no problems
- Other projects (LHC, QMC, Spinhenge) have not reported this error when running the CPU at 80%
- For me it seems that the throttling does not work properly for single core machines, not only multi core

So, since I want to "go easy" on my PC, I do not want to install further software (to much hassle), and since there are plenty other projects, I will simply detach from Einstein until the issue is fixed...

Nevertheless, thanks for your input.

FWIW, I have a 4-core, 2-processor Linux system being throttled at 50 or 80% and it's crunched for Einstein and other projects just fine.

Good luck.

I had Spybot cause allot of computation errors.
