I have a computer with only 512 MB of RAM. I had to uninstall Boinc on it because the projects were eating all the memory and it was constantly grinding the hard drive. So can anyone tell me what project has the smallest memory footprint?

Thanks!

Hmmmm ... good question! I certainly don't have an exhaustive list, but if you get a few others replying like me you should get a few to choose from.

Right now I'm running six different projects. The two with the smallest memory footprint are WUProp@Home (approx 4.5MB max per task) and SIMAP (approx 11.5MB max per task). This on a 64-bit version of Windows XP Pro.

You can look such things up at WUProp, on the results page.
You can contribute to that list by crunching for it

Thanks! That's exactly what I need!

Looks like Enigma may be my baby!

I get "Computing for Clean Water" WUs on my old G4 with 768 MB of RAM; have run a lot of other projects in the past when I had less memory but they've probably upped their memory usage to compensate for the fact that people have tons of memory these days.

Enigma also has pretty low memory requirements; I would be crunching that on my G3 with 384 MB, but it doesn't work very well on anything older than a G4. It works just fine on x86. There are plenty of other projects (BURP and ORE/RenderFarm.fi) that have variations between batches of WUs but occasionally can support low-memory machines.

If you are concerned about performance, you can also make some tweaks with memory usage in your computing preferences.
