Sound to me like something with proteins?

Propably why I keep getting the "this is not a boinc project" message from the boinc manager *lol*

Anyway, it looks like they are not official yet - no forums and no xml's

Its more or less useless at the moment, most people wont sign up as it is in Japanese, Google does an alright job at translating it in to jibberish that is nearly understood, and I think the more determined who will dechipre it are generally the ones who have a 5.x.x client.

Oh well it may change at some point

if they're still running server v4 then indeed

i assume something is holding it up, most probably funding, or something in the organisational pipe

subscribe to their RSS feed and i'm sure they'll announce when they're going again (hopefully they'll realise that v5 is available lol)

All the previous Japanese projects have run a slightly different version of Boinc. One is still running on 2.x

they are behind on technology for once.

Well, if they're still running BOINC ver 4.x; I'm gathering they haven't even thought of adding an RSS feed as of yet. Probably supporting BOINC 5.4.9 would be a much more pressing consideration.

As to translating it, let me put it this way. I'm in the process of learning Japanese, and am far from fluent in it... Considering also that we've only thus far gone over about 30, maybe 45 kanjii so far, and one needs to know many more to even be able to read a Japanese newspaper or something, it will still be a looooong time for me

i've heard it's around 10,000 symbols to be able to comprehend a newspaper, no wonder the japanese are so smart :p

A lot of Kanjii is necessary. From what some more advanced students have told me (who are in like 300 level Japanese classes or above), one's looking at around 65 thousand Kanjii or so, to be really fluent. After awhile however, it can get a bit easier, as there are a certain number of base Kanjii (as well as Chinese characters, which Kanjii essentially is, though depending on the word it might or might not be read the same), roots or radicals (kinda tired to remember the specific word now). Words/ideas relating to it, will have some variation to it. I'd heard this from both one of my Japanese teachers, as well as one of my Tai Chi teachers, who though she doesn't know Chinese per say, does go to Hong Kong once a year to study with, well their (actually) sifu...

There is also the 2 forms of Kana, aka Hiragana which is used for gramatical particles as well as for native Japanese words (where Kanjii isn't being used). Then there is Katakani, which is used for words which were imported from the West. These forms of Kana are also not like English with just 26 of them. With the exception of n, all kana contain a vowel, so are either a vowel by itself or a consanant + a vowel for the individual character. This leaves something like 46 Hiragana and 45 Katakana. Then some of the kana can change pronunciation through the inclusion of a " or a small circle to to the top/right hand side of the char... The 3 forms of writting are used together in any given text (for different things), and also the sentence structure, among other things is very different from English...

Oh, and yes Tanpaku is going to BOINC version 5; though still no update on when XML stats will be exported, which would be necessary for BOINC stats to support the project. They have a directory set aside, as well as a link in their "other stats" section of their webpage. But it's more a place holder now, as the directory is empty. But one thing at a time I s'pose, the project is still Alpha

The site should be down 21st n 22nd June 2006 to update servers to Boinc v5

Right now their servers indicate

Note!!
Now, TANPAKU server is down for mantenance and upgarade.

Sometime latter today, it should be back up. With any luck, xml stats will also start getting exported so Willy will be able to include this project with the rest of our stats. But ver. 5 support is definitely a start, and a start some of us having been waiting for so we could begin crunching with our accounts...

I'm gathering that they aren't finished upgrading. The notice on the front page still says the server is down for maitenance and upgrades. Some users are reporting on their boards, that a few odds and ends (such as bb code in their profiles isn't working)...

Getting same thing, but gathering it will also take a lil time before work generation gets re-enabled.

I got some work, though I doubt it's the actual units we'll be crunching as time moves forward. Looks like small test units (like 1 credit per WU or so). A few notes:

- They complete yes that fast. About a minute, or so
- They have a > 12 hour deadline (probably because they are extremely short I'm imagining test WUs for their setup)
- The WU quota per CPU core is currently > 65,000 (looks like the largest value that could fit in a 16-bit integer, aka 2 ^ 16 power).

People who want to get work can (or at least I came home to found my comp crunchign some Tanpaku)... The, I'm gathering more standard? units we'll probably see latter on after the preliminary testing has been done...

One more project to crunch
No matter if it's english or japanese

Got my account and worked the first wu's.
They're short, about 10 min or so (on an AMD XP 2200), like XtremLab. Sounds good for all who love fast results.
But the application still needs some improvements:
Progress state still stays at 0 % the whole time until the unit is completed.
And a screensaver would be nice. They have a cool animation on the website how proteins are folded. If they can create a saver like this it could be looking better than Rosetta's
