we've only thus far gone over about 30, maybe 45 kanjii so far, and one needs to know many more to even be able to read a Japanese newspaper
i've heard it's around 10,000 symbols to be able to comprehend a newspaper, no wonder the japanese are so smart :p
A lot of Kanjii is necessary. From what some more advanced students have told me (who are in like 300 level Japanese classes or above), one's looking at around 65 thousand Kanjii or so, to be really fluent. After awhile however, it can get a bit easier, as there are a certain number of base Kanjii (as well as Chinese characters, which Kanjii essentially is, though depending on the word it might or might not be read the same), roots or radicals (kinda tired to remember the specific word now). Words/ideas relating to it, will have some variation to it. I'd heard this from both one of my Japanese teachers, as well as one of my Tai Chi teachers, who though she doesn't know Chinese per say, does go to Hong Kong once a year to study with, well their (actually) sifu...
There is also the 2 forms of Kana, aka Hiragana which is used for gramatical particles as well as for native Japanese words (where Kanjii isn't being used). Then there is Katakani, which is used for words which were imported from the West. These forms of Kana are also not like English with just 26 of them. With the exception of n, all kana contain a vowel, so are either a vowel by itself or a consanant + a vowel for the individual character. This leaves something like 46 Hiragana and 45 Katakana. Then some of the kana can change pronunciation through the inclusion of a " or a small circle to to the top/right hand side of the char... The 3 forms of writting are used together in any given text (for different things), and also the sentence structure, among other things is very different from English...
Oh, and yes Tanpaku is going to BOINC version 5; though still no update on when XML stats will be exported, which would be necessary for BOINC stats to support the project. They have a directory set aside, as well as a link in their "other stats" section of their webpage. But it's more a place holder now, as the directory is empty. But one thing at a time I s'pose, the project is still Alpha
