Hello,
I am a member of team Gridcoin. Our team is going to reward members for participation in the ongoing Pentathlon challenge. I have noticed some inconsistency between data of our leader and data provided by BoincStats. Can you please, check them/explain the difference?

The leader has information about gained credit pulled directly from the BOINC projects. He exported tables with a few most active people in project Cosmology@home here.

The second table is showing sum of credit obtained from start of the challenge. Lets focus on credit gained in Cosmology from May 5, 0:00 to May 8, 12:42 (UTC).

- stats of our leader: 423304
- BoincStats: 143987 + 129677 + 50997 = 324661

Second user e7f90818e3e87c0bbefe83ad3cfe27e1
- stats of our leader: 384802
- BoincStats: 45244 + 149723 + 91966 = 286933

- stats of our leader: 16480
- BoincStats: 128

The stats on BOINCstats are based on the XML exports of the projects. These exports are not realtime and differ per project. Some do it once a day, some once per hour, anything in between is also possible.

All times in UTC.

Lets assume the project exports every four hours. The export is at 00:00, 04:00, 08:00 and takes some time to complete. The export used for the daily update is most probably the one running at 12:00. This means, the daily update uses the number of credits the user had around 12:00. Repeat this for the next day and the daily increase is the difference between credit at 12:00 on day 1 and credit at 12:00 on day 2.

Your leader took the credit numbers directly from the project website. This is a realtime number. You mention 0:00 on May 5th. Therefor I assume that he went to the project at 0:00, looked what the credit was, then repeated this the next days.

This means there is a twelve hour gap between the data points which can result in a huge difference in credits.

And then I didn't mention that projects sometimes do not export stats on time due to problems which again result in huge differences.

So I think you can't compare these numbers accurately.

Okay, you are right, the 12 hours may cause huge difference.

I did expect it to be shifted by 12 hours ("Total credit" counted at the end of the day and "Credit per day" counted as credit difference between 0:00 and 23:59). However, I believe you have some reason for this so I am not going to try to convince you.

Thank you for the explanation, you can lock/mark as solved/whatever this thread.
