Now that the list of projects which support AMD64 clients one way or another is fairly significant, those with a 64-bit Linux system would like to try it: boinc_5.4.11_x86_64-pc-linux-gnu.gz (note that it's zipped up).

Here are the projects that support AMD64 one way or another:

Perhaps one would find this script useful to start BOINC as a daemon.

I didn't build such a client because I don't have any Windows x64 systems that I normally use (I do have a dual-boot system that has both x86 and x64 windows).

So far, only HashClash supports Windows x64 by sending the x86 application.

On my part, I'm waiting to make a 64-bit Linux client version 5.8.8 available as soon as it becomes the recommended one for Linux (perhaps not until Docking sorts out the issues this version causes them).

As WCG uses HTTPS in the communications with the client, download this new x86-64 Linux client, still version 5.8.11, boinc_5.8.11_x86_64-pc-linux-gnu.tgz, copy all the files in it to your system's working BOINC directory and restart the client to start crunching for WCG too.

BOINC to-do list now includes:
"Allow the scheduler to take a list of platforms (not just one). E.g. a Win64 machine could send Win64 and Win32."

That would avoid projects needing to have a 64-bit platform with 32-bit application. Note this is to-do list, not finished stuff...

I just found out that the client doesn't need to be restarted after all. Just copy the file ca-bundle.crt from the tar-ball above to the BOINC working directory and voilà. The next time it contacts WCG it'll use the new encryption keys automatically.

Seeing this particular subject pretty much any DC forum with the AMD64 header, what's the specificity of it being limited to an AMD64 platform. Does it not run on an Intel64? Also for completeness, WCG sends 32-bit apps to 64bit XPpro64 clients, but only see Linux noted?

AMD64 is the official name of the 64-bit extensions to x86 (see http://www.x86-64.org), whether it's AMD's AMD64 or Intel's IA32e, EM64T or Intel64.

AMD64 is the official name of the 64-bit extensions to x86 (see http://www.x86-64.org), whether it's AMD's AMD64 or Intel's IA32e, EM64T or Intel64.

To clarify the sending to Win64, it was not meant to imply that the BOINC 64 compile would get 32 app work, just that the 32bit code does run on Win64. I'll clarify this.

Of course it bears AMD's logo. Guess which company invented the 64-bit extensions to x86? In that site you'll find the official documents on the interfaces defined for Linux ports on AMD64 systems. The same site hosts the mailing lists related to the kernel port to AMD64. You won't find any Intel site doing the same because AMD leads the deployment of AMD64.
