No negative criticism here (you're doing a great job evangelizing 64 bit!), but I have a suggestion:

A single post to all the project forums (and places like this) pointing to a single URL where you keep an updated listing.

@Augustine,
I'm using your 5.8.17 on Ubuntu 64. The Malaria and WCG WUs all crash. Predictor, Docking and SIMAP seem to work correctly.

Any ideas?

Thank you.

I don't see any Manager in these, just the Client. It's inconvenient to have to go to another machine to use it's Manager to suspend, resume or whatever. I'd like a 64-bit Manager as well as the 64-bit Client.

Thanks.

No clue. I have only one system running 5.8.17 and it seems to crunch for all projects smoothly, including Malaria and WCG.

Have you tried 5.8.15 on that system before?

It would be nice to have a 64-bit BOINC Manager also.

There's no real need for a 64-bit manager, as the 32-bit one works just fine.

I'll add a note to the README file stating that the 64-bit client is intended to complement a normal set up using the official 32-bit client, which does include the manager.

Thanks.

You are correct. If the official Manager worked, I would not need a 64-bit Manager.

It may an issue with the Ubuntu 64-bit 0S, but the 32-bit Manager does not seem to work on my system.

Which OS are you using?

Thanks.

I have not tried any other 64-bit Client before.

The 32-bit Ubuntu and official client worked just fine for me, but the Malaria and WCG error immediately on the 64-bit Ubuntu and 5.8.17 Client.

Thanks.

Probably for the same reason that the 32-bit manager doesn't work under the 64-bit OS: you must install the 32-bit libraries as well.

Docking, Predictor and SIMAP send native 64-bit applications and a 64-bit OS shouldn't have trouble executing them. However, Malaria and WCG send 32-bit applications to the 64-bit clients, which require the presence of the 32-bit libraries as well.

I use 64-bit SUSE, which installs most 32-bit libraries by default. You may have to tweak Ubuntu to do so too, but I'm not able to offer help on this distro.

Projects just keep on supporting AMD64!

    * Native 64-bit Application Sent to AMD64 Clients

      * SIMAP (Linux)
      * Chess960 (Linux)
      * ABC (Linux)

      * Malaria (Linux)
      * Docking (Linux & Windows)
      * RieselSieve (Windows)
      * WCG (Linux)
      * Pirates (Linux)

Hi Augustine,
I'm tring your boinc_5.8.15_x86_64-pc-linux-gnu.tgz.
SIMAP ok: give me 64 bit client: hmmer_5.09_x86_64-pc-linux-gnu,
WCG ok: give me 32 bit client,
but Seti and Rosetta tell me:
Message from server: platform 'x86_64-pc-linux-gnu' not found

For Seti I know where I can get unofficial 64 bit or 32 bit SSE2 client
But in your 32 bit list Seti is present, and here:
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/apps.php
it seems to exist a offical 64 bit client!

Hi Augustine,
I'm tring your boinc_5.8.15_x86_64-pc-linux-gnu.tgz.

I use Suse 10.2 64 bit on Celeron 2.8GHz 64 bit.

Is it possible to use 64 bit client with 32 bit boinc?

Rosetta is not in the list above and SETI, although it does support AMD64, uses the wrong platform string, x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu. Therefore, neither project will work with this client.

As I said before, provided that one installs the 32-bit libraries in 64-bit Linux systems, most projects should work.

Ok, so Seti shouldn't be in the list.
There is a way to get official "x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu" seti client?
Somewhere there is a link to download it or I must simulate boinc protocol?

Ok, but find, download and copy 32 bit client isn't so comfortable.
It's more comfortable for now, let boinc download 32 bit client and manual install only more rare 64 bit client.
So I have asked you if 64 bit client run fine with 32 bit boinc...

Thanks,
and sorry for my bad English.

I installed the 32-bit libs from Ubuntu. Apparently that fixed the issue with Malaria and WCG, at least they do not error immediately like before.

The BOINC manager still does not work though.

Thanks for your help.

berkley development version for win 64 can be found here:
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/?C=M;O=D (boinc_5.9.4_windows_x86_64.msi)

be worned though that it is not stable and dose not send the correct command to the server to get the 32bit app if no 64bit app is avalible.

5.9.5 will fix the latter part, so it is recommended you wate untill then to try this version of win 64 client.

When the client is working correctly, you will be able to download WUs for the 32 bit windows platform when no work is available for the 64bit windows platform, or if the 64bit platform is not supported yet. I think there will be needed server upgrade, but I am not sure on this.

Correct the server must be upgraded with the head from 4/19/7 or later for the alternate platform to work.

Be warned that it doesn't use the platform string (windows_amd64) that has been used by projects for over 6 months, so it won't get native 64-bit applications from any project that already supports AMD64.

Perhaps the projects will follow the example of Docking, which will support both the legacy and the new platform strings for the time being. Perhaps not.
